CHARACTERIZATIONAlpha8/beta1 is a receptor for fibronectin. The alpha6 integrin subunit participates in the formation of both alpha6 beta1 and alpha6 beta4 laminin receptors, which have been reported to play an important role in cell adhesion and migration and in morphogenesis. Findings suggest that the interaction between integrin alpha 6 beta 1 and laminin plays an important role in the corpus luteum formation and follicular growth. See: Horm Res 1998;50 Suppl 2:25-9 Laminin suppresses progesterone production by human luteinizing granulosa cells via interaction with integrin alpha 6 beta 1. See: J Clin Endocrinol Metab 1997 Jul;82(7):2122-8
BIOACTIVITYAlpha6-beta1 integrin has significant effects follicle growth and/or maturation, follicle atresia, ovulation, steroidogenesis, oocyte growth and/or maturation. The evidence for the importance of the a6b1 integrin in fertilization came primarily from studies using a blocking antibody, GoH3. This antibody was made against this integrin, and it identified this integrin in the mouse cell membrane and cortex. When this antibody was added to mouse eggs, it was found to block the fusion of the sperm and egg membranes.
