CHARACTERIZATIONMucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1 (MAdCAM-1) is an adhesion molecule that mediates recruitment of lymphocytes into the gut mucosa. One study in mice demonstrated that anti-MAdCAM-1 antibody significantly ameliorates DSS-induced colitis, suggesting that MAdCAM-1 may be useful for control of inflammatory bowel diseases. See: J Pharmacol Exp Ther 2000 Oct;295(1):183-9 MAdCAM-1 expressed in chronic inflammatory liver disease supports mucosal lymphocyte adhesion to hepatic endothelium. MAdCAM-1 on hepatic vessels supported adhesion of alpha4beta7+ lymphocytes (i.e., gut-derived T cells) from patients with inflammatory bowel disease and primary sclerosing cholangitis, providing a mechanism to explain the hepatic recruitment of mucosal lymphocytes in inflammatory liver disease complicating inflammatory bowel disease. See: Hepatology 2001 May;33(5):1065-72
