INDEXPlant lectin / Plant / Seed / Hololectins / Sialic acid-binding lectins
CHARACTERIZATIONThere are sialic acid-specific leukoagglutinating lectin from the seeds of Maackia amurensis. Maackia has a strong hemagglutininating lectin, called MAH (M. amurensis hemagglutinin) and a potent mitogenic lectin, called MAL (M. amurensis leucoagglutinin).
BIOACTIVITYBoth MAH and MAL agglutinate human erythrocytes in a blood group independent manner. See: J Biol Chem 1974 (249); 2786-2792 MAH is a more potent agglutinin than MAL. Both lectins are mitogenic toward human periferal lymphocytes, but MAL is fivefold more active than MAH. See: J Biol Chem 1974 (249); 2786-2792 MAL stongly agglutinates the murine lymphoma cell line BW5147. See: J Biol Chem 1988 (261);4576-4585 Maackia lectin discriminates between normal and chronic leukemic human erythrocytes. It bind to normal, but not malignat cells. See: Biochem Biophys Res Comm 1995 (209); 921-929

SPECIFICITYMAHs: NANA (Ser/Thr-linked tetrasaccharide) MALs: Results indicate that MAL reacts with greatest affinity with the trisaccharide sequence Neu5Ac/Gc alpha 2,3Gal beta 1,4GlcNAc/Glc.
MAHb: NANA
MALb: NANA
