INDEXPlant lectin / Plant / Stem / Hololectins / Gal/GalNAc-binding lectins
CHARACTERIZATIONFour isolectins (ME-C2, -D2, E2, F2) have been isolated from M. eruca. Lectin activity has also been reported in other cacti, including: Pachydereus pringleii, Cholla opuntia, Echinocereus engelmanii, Lopocereus shotti, Stenocereus thurberi and Machaerocereus gummosus. See: Lectin: Biol Biochem Clin Biochem 1985 (4); 437-445
BIOACTIVITYBoth lectins agglutinate erythrocytes from several animal species. The lectin agglutinates all human erythrocytes. See: Plant Sci 1991 (77); 11-19 The lectin induces the inhibition of the phagocytic activity of murine macrophages. See: Glycoconj J 1995 (12); 699-706

SPECIFICITYGal (GalNAc and Gal-containing glycoproteins ; O-glycans) Binding specificity was directed to galactose-containing oligosaccharides and glycopeptides.
INHIBITORSHapten inhintion assays were specific for galactose, N-acteylgalactosamine and galactose-containg glycoproteins
