CHARACTERIZATIONThe lectin is serologically related to the A. caudatus lectin.
BIOACTIVITYMitogenic, immunosuppressive and phagocytic activity. The lectin agglutinates human ABO erythrocytes equally well. It is mitogenic to mouse spleen lymphocytes but is not cytotoxic. See: Phytochemistry 1988 (27) 313-317 It also inhibits the phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages to homologous erythrocytes and induces blastoid transformation of spoleen cells.
